Memorable Date in U.S History (S2)

1513 : Juan Ponce de Leon explored Florida coast

1524 : Giovanni da Verazzano led French expedition along coast from north Carolina to Nova Scotia, entered New York habour.

1539 : Hernando de Soto landed in Florida May 29 and crossed Missisipi river in 1541. He and his conquistadores died in Texas.

1540 : Francisco Vasquez de Coronado explored Southwest north of Rion Grande. Hernando de Alarcon reached Colorado river. Don Garcia Lopez de Cardenasreached Grand Canyon. Other explored California. Coronado tried to reach a legendary rich Indian 'The Seven Cities of Cibola and 'Kingdom of Quivira'. But he found only the pueblos of Zuni in 'Nueva Espana' (New Spain) and wigwams of Wichita tribes in what is now Kansas. He was the first European who saw the American bison (buffalo) in the Plains.
